Victims' families object to World Trade Center memorial construction
Preliminary works to build a World Trade Center memorial were continued on Monday, March 13 despite the fact that some of the victims' families were against the project. The families say that Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and Port Authority did not consult with them on the plans for the "Reflecting Absence" memorial and they are very displeased with the plans to pour concrete over the footprint of the North Tower. Moreover, families claim that building the memorial in the underground may be unsafe. However, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the LMDC said that there had been numerous forums and sessions organized to discuss the plans held, but the families did not object to it before. The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in a few weeks.
