Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to be expanded

New York architects on Monday unveiled a design plan that would more than double the size of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center - Construction would increase exhibition and meeting space from 790,000 to more than 1.3 million square feet. It also would add a hotel and new loading facility. The design of the construction was developed by a team of architectural firms: Richard Rodgers Partnership, FXFowle Architects and A. Epstein & Sons International. It includes a soaring 100-foot-high glass entrance and a tree-lined concourse along a now barren block on 11th Avenue between 39th and 40th streets. The design also would add the city's largest ballroom, which could function as extra exhibition space.
